Scrappers begin play tonight

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – The 17th season of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers gets underway this evening when they’ll visit Morgantown, West Virginia at 7:05 pm for the opener against the Black Bears.

The Scrappers will welcome back Travis Fryman (110-117), who takes over the team after being away for four years. Fryman’s best season as a manager was in 2009 when he led Mahoning Valley to their best finish (1st place, 49-27) in the Pinckney Division since 2000 (1st place, 48-28) and the most wins during the regular season (49) in team history.

This year’s roster features three of the Indians’ top six selections from this past week’s draft. Mark Mathias, second baseman, was taken in the third round. Mathias closed out his junior season at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a .356 average (72-202) and 11 extra base hits (7 2Bs, 3 3Bs, HR) and 42 runs scored. Tyler Krieger, a shortstop, went off the board in the 4th round. Tyler batted .339 (80-236) as he had 14 doubles, 14 steals and 28 RBIs to go along with his 45 runs scored. Ka’ai Tom, center fielder from Kentucky, was selected with the Tribe’s 5th round choice. Tom hit .375 (81-216) for the Wildcats this past season while stealing 15 bases, hitting 16 doubles and finishing with 5 homers and 51 RBIs (.443 OBP).

Facts: Throughout the history of Scrapper baseball, they’ve been able to garner 593 wins during the regular season (593-606). Tonight’s game will be the 1,200th regular season game for the Scrappers.
