NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – The Eastwood Expo Center has been demolished to make way for a Hampton Inn & Suites, according to Cafaro Co. spokesman Joe Bell.
Bell said the company announced last year that the hotel was coming and construction should begin in July.
“There has been a lot of demand for hotel space and this is a great addition because this has become a destination for a lot of people whose lives revolve around all the things they can get and do here,” Bell said.
He said right now, large exhibition shows cannot be accommodated at the mall complex, but that could change in the next few months as some shuffling of stores is taking place.
Gander Mountain is building a larger store in the same location and is using the former Linens & Things space next to Kohl’s as a temporary location. Bell said Gander Mountain will double in size and the new store should be open in time for the fall hunting season.
Once that happens, Bell said the Linens & Things space would be available for some shows that used to be held at the Expo Center.
Work also is progressing on the new Cafaro Co. headquarters and the Eastwood Conference Center, which will be attached to the Residence Inn by Marriott that opened last year. Bell said once the conference center opens, shows that used to be held at the Expo Center will use the new conference center.
He said the contractor told Cafaro officials the new headquarters and conference center should be ready to open in May of 2016.
