YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A series of hires and promotions means the Youngstown police and fire departments are back up to full strength.
Mayor John McNally welcomed one new police officer and three new firefighters Thursday. The new officer is LaCameron Workman. The three new firefighters are David Bernat, Scott Barton and Samuel Lucarell.
He also promoted two firefighters to command positions. Leslie Murphy was promoted from lieutenant to captain and Charles Smith was promoted from captain to battalion chief.
McNally said the police and fire departments are back up to full strength and that many of the new hires already live in the city of Youngstown. He said the city must keep trying to recruit city residents and minorities to jobs in the safety forces.
“We are always looking to improve our ability to hire city residents,” McNally said. “In the fire department, a couple of our officers were basically teaching a fire cadet class at Choffin over the past year, giving some city residents some new exposure to the fire services.”
McNally said the city civil service commission has also done a good job in recruiting applicants for city departments.
Because the police department is up to full staff, officers can now shift to more crime prevention work. On Monday, the new community policing squadron starts in every ward in the city.
