BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Home Depot in Boardman ordered an extra shipment of sump pumps ahead of this weekend’s predicted rainy weather.
The store’s project specialist, Holly Bennett, talked about what to buy to protect a home from flooding. Home Depot offers a variety of sump pumps, depending on the size of a person’s basement.
“They are going off the shelves like crazy,” she said.
Bennett said in addition to a standard sump pump, there also is one with a battery backup. The battery is supposed to last seven to eight hours.
“With the storms we have been having, if you have a basement you know floods and your power goes out, the backup battery kicks on,” she said.
Whichever kind of sump pump a person may buy, Bennett said they should do it now before it’s too late.
“Make sure you get here and get yours because it is better to have it in advance than finding out your basement is flooded,” Bennett said.
She also suggests having a wet/dry vacuum on hand to get rid of the water, as long as the power stays on.
“Common sense. If you have an older home, you are going to have water in your basement one way or another,” Michael Skurich of Poland said.
Skurich stopped at Home Depot in Boardman to pick up an extra sump pump, just in case the one at his home stops working.
“I know exactly what I am going to buy. A 1/2 horsepower sump pump that I have bought here many times before, believe it or not,” he said.
