Warren police: Sam’s Club employee run over by theft suspect

Truck used in Sam's Club theft impounded

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – A Sam’s Club employee in Warren was run over Thursday morning by someone police said was trying to steal from the back of the store.

The employee is recovering from minor injuries after police said he tried to stop a theft from behind the store around 12:30 a.m. and was rammed by a GMC pickup truck.

“Basically we had what initially began as a theft but it has become more serious when the Sam’s Club employee was assaulted,” Warren Police Det. Wayne Mackey said.

The employee told investigators he saw an unknown man trying to take objects from the back of the building, so he stood in front of the truck and called for help from other workers, but was hit and thrown to the ground.

Investigators had the truck taken to May’s towing. Police are trying to identify the suspect by using surveillance cameras around the store.

Sam’s Club released a statement via email regarding the incident:

“We’re very thankful our associate suffered only minor injuries. At this time we’re fully cooperating with local authorities who are investigating the incident.
