WARREN (WKBN) – As David Griffin was escorted out of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court and back to the county jail on Monday, he muttered four words, “I’m sorry. Thank you.”
Griffin, 48, took a plea deal and will serve a 15-year sentence after pleading guilty to multiple felony sex offenses, including gross sexual imposition, rape, unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and sexual battery. In court, his attorney, Timothy Kucharski, addressed Judge Andrew Logan on Griffin’s behalf.
“He understands that he’s responsible for it and that’s why he’s entering the plea,” Kucharski said. “There’s some instances that happened in the past that, unfortunately, Dave wasn’t able to say no to, and Dave should have stopped, and he shouldn’t have started doing the things he started.”
Prosecutors said the acts started when a female relative was as young as 11 years old and lasted for several years, into her adulthood.
“There’s sort of a strange dynamic as far as how he still views the victim,” Assistant Trumbull County Prosecutor Gabe Wildman said. “Obviously she’s not interested in his apology, I’m not interested in his apology either. He did what he did and there has to be a price to pay.”
Wildman said the victim approved of the deal and sentence.
“I think when you are dealing with child sex abuse, it is never enough time. The plea agreement and the sentence in this case was approved by the victim and that is the most important person that can approve a plea deal,” Wildman said.
When he is released, Griffin will be labeled as a Tier III sex offender, meaning he will have to register his address with the proper authorities for life.
