Preview: On December 17, former Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini accepted the same position at Youngstown State – becoming the seventh head football coach in school history. The Mooney graduate has been heralded as one of the most respected defensive minds in all of college football after successful stops at Louisiana State, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. Carl, Bo’s brother, and Ron Stoops Jr. will work as co-defensive coordinators on the staff while Shane Montgomery will continue with the Penguins as their offensive coordinator for the sixth year…In Youngstown State’s 18 years as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference (formerly Gateway) – the Penguins have had just 4 losing seasons but they’ve been only able to manage a winning mark in the league just eight times. Since 2007, the Penguins have compiled a 27-34 conference record…The rushing attack should be strong again as YSU returns both of their top two rushers from a year ago in Martin Ruiz (Tampa, FL) and Jody Webb (Toledo, OH – Whitmer), both juniors. Ruiz ran for 1350 yards on 256 attempts (5.0 ypc) and 10 scores. Martin also caught 16 passes out of the backfield. Webb, who was used less, rushed for 715 yards on 103 totes (6.9 ypc) and scored 9 touchdowns on the ground. Jody snagged 15 passes in 2014. Sophomore quarterback Hunter Wells (Navarre, OH – Fairless) received a ton of opportunities in his freshman year as he completed 121 of 202 passing (59.9%) for 1772 stripes and 14 touchdowns (7 TDs). Two of the Penguins’ top three pass catchers return in seniors Andrew Williams (Bowman, SC) and Andre Stubbs (Maple Heights, OH). Williams hauled in 54 receptions for 976 yards (6 TDs) while Stubbs was able to make 28 catches for 365 yards…On defense, the Penguins sacked opposing quarterbacks 29 times as they were able to force just 14 turnovers (9 interceptions, 5 fumbles recovered). Back in the mix is senior defensive tackle Emmanuel Kromah (Trenton, NJ) as well as defensive ends Terrell Williams (McKeesport, PA) and Derek Rivers (Kinston, NC). Kromah started all 12 games a year ago as he was able to stop opposing ball carries 25 times (16 solo) and sacked quarterbacks twice. Williams finished with 10 sacks and 51 tackles. Rivers led the team with 14 quarterback sacks and 17 tackles for a loss. Jaylin Kelly (Washington, PA) and Dubem Nwadiogbu (Lawrenceville, GA) are back at the linebacker position. Kelly tallied 84 tackles (6 for a loss) while Nwadiogbu led the Penguins with 104 tackles. Senior safety Tre Moore (Dayton, OH – Wayne) also will be back after his 4 interceptions a year ago and 78 tackles.
