CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – A fire broke out at a home in Canfield early Wednesday morning while the homeowner was asleep.
Fire crews were called just after midnight to the house in the 4900 block of Shields Road. The house sits several feet off the road in a wooded area.
A driver passing by alerted the Canfield Fire Department.
The man living in the house said he woke to the smell of smoke and tried to put the fire out himself but it was too large to handle. He also said he could not get to his phone to call 911.
When crews arrived, the house was fully engulfed. Dispatchers called for multiple crews to help fight the blaze.
The owner was treated for smoke inhalation. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The house is a total loss.
