Production resumes at East Liverpool pottery plant after fire

Hall China fire in East Liverpool, Ohio

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio (WKBN) – The Hall China Company, owned by Homer Laughlin, which is known for its Fiesta ware, remained open Tuesday following a fire at the East Liverpool business Monday night.

Operations continued Tuesday alongside the cleanup process. Employee Jody Eccles first saw smoke pour out of a decades-old, wooden dryer at the 100-year-old pottery business.

The 23-year employee helped get about a dozen of his co-workers safely out of the building and then called the fire department. Fortunately, the sprinkler system turned on and firefighters from East Liverpool and Wellsville responded quickly.

“We maintain them very, very vigorously. It is one of the key things for fire prevention on any plant, which a lot of the old plants have wood in them. This sprinkler system worked perfectly,” Hall China general manager Chuck Henderson said.

The pottery company has several other dryers on site to help produce Fiesta ware and other products. The company estimates thousands of dollars in damage.

Fire Chief Bill Jones said there is no structural damage to the building.
