Sen. Cafaro fires aid amid criminal investigation

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – It has been two weeks since State Sen. Capri Cafaro terminated the director of her district office.

It happened after she learned about an ongoing criminal investigation. Jonathan Wike volunteered for Cafaro’s first campaign in 2004.

In 2008, he was hired as the director to represent Cafaro, D-Hubbard, at community events when she was unable to attend and to enhance constituent services. That all changed when she learned about a recent investigation.

Police reports from Cortland, Howland and Vienna list Wike as a suspect for passing bad checks. BCI is handling the investigation, but so far Wike has not been charged with any crime.

“It is such a sad, sad situation and because I have known him for so long, my heart honestly is broken. I am not even mad. I am more sad than I am anything else,” Cafaro said.

Wike was never a state employee. Cafaro pays for the district office with money from her own salary and other additional funds.

Cafaro said that the district office in Warren will stay open for the remainder of her term, but she does not plan on hiring anyone to fill the district director position.
