Former teacher sentenced in date rape case

Jay Dana sentenced in date rape case

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A one-time Boardman school teacher said he never meant to hurt anyone, just before being hauled off to jail on sexual battery charges.

Jay Dana never even looked at his victims Thursday afternoon in court as he was being sentenced. He was convicted last month of giving his victims so much to drink during dates they became incapacitated and unable to keep him from having sex with them.

One of his three victims said she was assaulted more than eight years ago, but refused to give up pushing for justice.

“I have put my own shame, my own embarrassment, my own humility aside, to get this story out to as many people as possible. Not to get sympathy or attention, but rather to make sure his name is out there as publicly as possible,” Christine Large said.

She said after throwing up, Dana dragged her to a bathroom where she fell to the floor and blacked out again.

“My next recollection is of him standing over me, me laying on my back, holding my pants above me yelling ‘put these on. Put these on.’ Again, I am laying there thinking ‘why are they off?’,” Large said.

She told the judge she was sick for several days after the encounter and was convinced Dana had put drugs in her drink. Years later, she started hearing other women had been through the same thing.

“He followed me with my wine glass and had kept pushing me to drink more. It was shortly after I had drank from that one glass of wine that I did not remember anything else,” victim Marie Brickley said.

Soon after her incident, Brickley discovered Dana’s wife had died of acute alcohol poisoning after what he told police was a night of drinking games. No charges have ever been filed in her death.

“I spent the entire spring and summer with my doors locked, always looking over my shoulder, in complete fear. This took the life out of me,” Brickley said.

As part of his sentence, Dana will serve 75 days in the Mahoning County Jail. Neither of his victims was happy about that, and pleaded with the judge to give him more time.

He also will have to register as a sexual predator every 90 days for the rest of his life.
