Woman indicted in baby’s day care death

Child abuse court case

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A Lennox Avenue woman who operates a day care out of her home was indicted Thursday by a Mahoning County grand jury in connection to the death of an infant in her care.

Deborah Poindexter, 46, is charged with murder and two counts of endangering children, according to the indictment.

The baby died Jan. 29 after he stopped breathing at Care Bear Day Care. Mehki Dawson, 4 months old, was lying on the floor when Poindexter went upstairs to answer the door, according to a police report.

She told police the baby was crying when she returned and she thought one of the other children had fallen on him. She told police she called 911 when he stopped breathing.

The indictment does not specify the cause of death, but accuses Poindexter of “recklessly abusing” Dawson.
