Youngstown Air Reserve Station seeks expanded military role

VIENNA, Ohio (WKBN) – Local politicians had a first-hand look at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station on Monday.

The air reserve station is launching a public support campaign to help bring home new missions. Local, state and county officials were taken for a flight on one of the air station’s C-130 airplanes.

The ride lasted about 40 minutes. Officers said they want to help increase awareness of the air station’s mission.

“This is their air base as much as it is our air base. These are their airmen as well. These are their neighbors, their friends, their family that are working here. By coming out here, it knocks down some of the mystery of what goes on from beyond the fence,” 910th Airlift Wing Commander Col. James Dignan said.

The air base wants to expand to become an official deployment station for all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Officers said they need local support to make that happen.
