Key Losses: The Tigers graduated 27% of their roster from a year ago including Brad Mitchell (289 rushing yards, 483 receiving yards) as well as defenders Matthew Swingle and Jon Whisonant.

Key Returnees: Senior Josh Walters is back after throwing for 1085 yards and 5 scores. Some of Walters’ top targets are back as well in Alan Boone (230 yards), Alex Ball (145 yards), and Ben Simpson (145 yards). Promising sophomore Colton Hunt (2.7 yard per carry average) is back in the mix at running back.

Key Storyline: Coach Franke led Edgewood to a 6-14 mark over the last two seasons. Franke’s Warriors have gotten out of the starting gate a tad slow as they began the past two seasons with identical 0-3 marks. How will the philosophy change from last year to this year?

Strengths: With a new coaching staff in place, there is excitement generating around the program which can be felt at all levels. This sort of enthusiasm can only help a group achieve more success in the future.

Weaknesses: Coach Franke and his staff will be pushing for improvement this season. The defense was shredded in five of their last seven contests by allowing 45 points or more. Over their last four games, the Tigers defense allowed 200 points to be scored. On offense, Newton Falls will be seeking more consistent play along the line to give their signal caller more time to deliver the football and to allow runners to carry the rock unfazed by defenders upon receiving the hand off. The Tigers’ offense has been shut out four times in their last eleven contests.

Game to Watch: August 28 vs. Rootstown
…The Tigers’ last win came in week one of last season when they defeated Rootstown, 27-20. Newton Falls is riding a 9-game losing skid overall and at home.
