MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) – Authorities say a woman was killed and nine children were injured when a van crashed into the side of a train in southwest Ohio.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says it happened at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in Middletown.

Investigators say the 62-year-old driver was on her last pickup of the night for the Church at Mayfield’s weeklong vacation Bible school when she crashed through a down rail gate and hit a freight train.

The front seat passenger, 62-year-old Jan Martin, was taken to Atrium Medical Center, where she later died. Police say nine children, ranging from 7 to 10 years old, and the driver suffered injuries that aren’t life-threatening.

Investigators aren’t sure why the driver ignored the warning signals and drove into the train.

The crash is under investigation.
