YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Mahoning County Engineer Pat Ginnetti said resurfacing work should begin in September on a section of Western Reserve Road in Beaver Township that sustained a lot of damage over the spring and early summer.
The stretch of road between Tippecanoe Road and Hitchcock Road was completely rebuilt within the last 10 years, but melting snows in the winter and heavy rains in the spring and summer have been especially tough on the area, which is prone to high water problems.
“You have water from the surface penetrating down and water from the bottom coming up and I think in this case, the sub-base was saturated and with all the car movement and truck movement on there, it just broke the asphalt up much sooner than it should have,” Ginnetti said.
Recently, Mahoning County officials were given permission to use about $1 million in construction funds originally earmarked for 2016 a year early to cover most of the costs.
Ginnetti said the project will include milling off the existing pavement and resurfacing it with several inches of new asphalt.
