Baby’s body found in Wayne County home

STERLING, Ohio (AP) – Police in Wayne County Ohio say a newborn’s body was found in a box in a home bathtub hours after the girl’s mother died of a suspected heroin overdose.

Wayne County sheriff’s Capt. Doug Hunter says an older man at the home called 911 Saturday to report the 23-year-old woman was unresponsive, and she died at a hospital.

Hunter says the man told investigators that the woman delivered a baby hours earlier at home in Sterling, Ohio, about 20 miles west of Akron. He said the infant died and was put in the tub.

The coroner tells WEWS-TV that more testing is needed to determine whether the infant was alive at birth.

The coroner says both autopsies showed no trauma or other defects, and she’s awaiting toxicology reports to determine how they died.
