YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Friday through Sunday, you can save 6.75% while shopping in Trumbull County and 7.25% in Mahoning and Columbiana Counties, all thanks to Ohio’s first-ever tax holiday.
However, the tax-free weekend only applies to clothing under $75 per item and school supplies and materials under $20 per item.
“We realize what a great opportunity this is for shoppers to automatically get a discount,” Cafaro Company Spokesman Joe Bell said.
There is no limit on how many eligible items you can buy.
The tax-free list also includes some merchandise you might not consider…including diapers, costumes and wedding apparel.
“The merchants are looking forward to it,” Bell said. “It might give them a little bump, even though back to school season is very busy for them anyway. This is just one more reason for people to shop or to buy a little bit more.”
The Ohio Department of Taxation estimates customers will save almost $26 million.
“This is kind of a pilot program. The general assembly set it up as a one-time event,” Ohio Department of Taxation Communications Director Gary Gudmundson said. “What’s going to happen after this is the department of taxation will put together an analysis of how the weekend went, what kind of economic activity there was.”
The department will present its findings to lawmakers for them to determine if Ohio should have a tax free weekend again next year.
