YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A former Campbell teacher pleaded guilty Thursday to having a sexual relationship with her students and could face up to 17 years in prison if given the maximum sentence.
Shannon Wojtowicz, 30, of Enon Valley, entered the plea before Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge R. Scott Krichbaum. She pleaded to three counts of sexual battery, one count of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance and one count of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles. She originally was indicted on a dozen charges.
“The three counts of sexual battery again are sexual conduct with three different victims, these high school boys. The illegal use of a minor represents the fact that she did receive photographs of an underage male and his genitalia. And the disseminating is representative of her sending photographs out to a juvenile,” Mahoning County Assistant Prosecutor Jennifer McLaughlin said.
Wojtowicz is now pregnant and due to deliver her baby in November. She tearfully told the judge she understood what she was doing when she pleaded guilty and gave up her right to a trial.
She will be sentenced on Oct. 3. She could get probation or up to 17 years in prison and a $35,000 fine. She also will be labeled a sexual offender.
In February, police arrested and charged her with having an inappropriate physical relationship with a high school student. Police said the one-time high school math instructor had sexual contact with a number of her students over a period of several years and had exchanged text messages with some of the students involving nudity. Wojtowicz resigned from the district after the investigation began in January.
The case was investigated by the Ohio BCI’s Crimes Against Children unit since two of the woman’s relatives work for the city of Campbell.
