YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Fall camp continues for Bo Pelini and the Youngstown State football program. And there’s plenty of local flavor…with sixteen players from the area on the Penguins’ current roster.
Eight of those players are with the program for the first time this Fall. Among those on the team…wide receiver Isiah Scott…a former standout at Hubbard.
“I mean they treat me like family here, so I got used to it quick. And I just like it,” said Scott.
He’s joined by South Range’s own…running back Joe Alessi. ” It’s honestly the best feeling in the world. I love being here. It’s been awesome so far. Everybody’s so awesome here, the coaching staff is great. It’s a great time to be a Penguin,” Alessi said.
Cardinal Mooney graduate Zak Kennedy is now a Penguins’ placekicker.
Meanwhile, former West Branch standout lineman Jacob Zinni now occupies the trenches at Stambaugh Stadium.
“My driving force is to make sure people know where I’m from,” Zinni said. “I want people here at the game where I’m from. That means the world to me. It’s awesome.”
Former Warren Harding defensive back Jalyn Powell is back home after transferring from Michigan State. “Just knowing that everybody from my city can come see me play if they want to. And, this is my area and I feel so comfortable with it. It’s honestly a blessing to be here,” Powell said.
Other local players on the roster include: Running Back Demond Hymes (Warren Harding), Kicker Connor McFadden (Poland), LB Mike Palumbo (Hickory), OL Matt Bell (Hickory), OL Chuck Zaborsky (Austintown Fitch), LS Steven Wethli (New Castle), TE Mark Schuler (Springfield), DT Steve Zaborsky (Austintown Fitch), RB Tevin McCaster (New Castle), P Nick Sheely (Austintown Fitch), WR Darien Townsend (Youngstown Christian).
