Mom arrested in death of 1-month-old found in NYC courtyard

NEW YORK (AP) – A mother has been arrested on a murder charge after her newborn baby boy was found dead in the courtyard of their New York City apartment building.

The New York Police Department said Rashida Chowdhury was under arrest Saturday.

The 21-year-old is awaiting arraignment, and it’s unclear whether she has a lawyer who can comment on the charges. No telephone number could immediately be found for her Queens home.

Medical examiners ruled baby Rizwan Ahmad’s death a homicide, but police haven’t publicly detailed how they believe he died. They had been investigating whether he fell, was tossed from a window or was left in the courtyard.

Neighbor Mazol Ilyayeva told reporters she heard something fall around 4 a.m. Friday and then saw the child’s lifeless body in the courtyard.
