OSP: Coroner working to ID I-76 crash victims

Fatal accident, fire on I-76 near turnpike interchange.

NORTH JACKSON, Ohio – The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the two victims of a three-vehicle accident Tuesday night on I-76 in Jackson Township were badly burned in the inferno that followed the collision. The coroner’s office is working to ID the victims and the patrol is giving out no other information.

The two people killed were in a Toyota station wagon that was crushed between two tractor trailer rigs on eastbound I-76, one mile before the turnpike interchange. The patrol says the semi behind the car may have failed to slow down as traffic was transitioning into a work zone. No one has been cited and the investigation continues.

Flames reached high into the air after the accident at around 8 p.m. Tuesday night. The interstate was closed for nearly six hours for the investigation and removal of debris and vehicles.
