Key Losses: The Irish were hurt by the departure of QB/LB Vito Penza, WR/DB John Martynyszyn, kicker John Hintz and defensive stalwart Tyler Leonard this off-season. Penza ran for 979 yards while scoring 12 touchdowns. The Dartmouth-bound signal caller also threw for 736 yards (5 TDs). The Irish will also be without linemen Robbie Beardman and Sean McGuire, who both graduated.
Key Returnees: The Irish return a ton of talent to this year’s roster. Linemen Jabbar Price and Giacomo Cappabianca headline their senior class along with standout runner Kimauni Johnson and Marcus Mosley. Also back is Deion Edwards, who was an honorable mention selection of the All-Inland Northeast Ohio team as a junior.
Key Storyline: After enduring through a 4-6 season which saw Ursuline play eight schools which finished with a winning record in 2013, the Fighting Irish improved to 8-5 last fall. Could another jump be in the cards this year? All signs are pointing in that direction again.
Strengths: I’m not certain if Ursuline’s defense could improve upon a unit which allowed just 18.1 points per game in ten games against teams who advanced to the playoffs in 2014. Even without the likes of Vito Penza, Tyler Leonard, and John Martynyszyn – the Irish should possess one of the most talented groups in the entire area. Price and Cappabianca lead a front line which also returns junior Jeff Marx and senior Jonathan Neely. The back seven is solid with Deion Edwards, Marcus Mosley, Dawalyn Washington and Kimauni Johnson all back in the mix.
Weaknesses: The special teams took a major hit with the graduation of Hintz and Penza. A huge question mark will be to see if Ursuline can find the leadership that they received from their senior class including Penza and Tyler Leonard.
Game to Watch:October 23 at Cardinal Mooney
…The Irish will seek their first win against their rival-Mooney Cardinals in three years. Ursuline has lost their last two meetings by a combined score of 60-21.
Odds and Ends
…Since the school’s back-to-back-to-back state championships in 2008 to 2010, the Irish have not had winning seasons in consecutive years…This year’s coaching staff includes first year assistants – Paul Kempe (QB) and John Kopp (OL/DL).
