4-year-old pulled from Willow Lake pool on respirator

CHAMPION TWP, Ohio (WKBN) –  As of Wednesday morning, a 4-year-old Masury girl was in grave condition on a respirator after she was pulled from the swimming pool at Willow Lake in Champion Township Monday evening. Little Tillasia Douglas is at Akron Children’s Hospital.

The child went missing in the crowded pool at about 6 p.m. Champion Fire Chief John Hickey says every minute is precious in such a situation. He says, “Basically, they’re estimating between 10 and 15 minutes from the last time she was seen to when they pulled her out of the water. So really, unknown downtime.”

The girl was not breathing when township firefighters arrived. Emergency responders were able to restore a pulse.

Swimmer Amy Rivera said she was there when the girl was found and helped perform CPR on her.

“There was another lady performing CPR on her and another guy holding her head. By that time, she had already been giving her CPR for several minutes and she asked me if I could take over,” Rivera said.

WKBN spoke with a woman who is camping at Willow Lake for the summer. She said the pool was packed with kids Monday evening.

We left a message for the owners at Willow Lake. But they have not responded.

Chief Hickey says, “It’s just a matter of being able to watch the kids when they’re in the pool. For the parents, for the guardians. It has to be a team effort.”
