ALBRIGHTSVILLE, Pa. (AP) – Authorities say two high school cheerleaders were killed in a two-vehicle collision in eastern Pennsylvania.
State police in Monroe County said Jasmine Fonseca and Taylor Shepherdson, both 16-year-olds from Albrightsville, were passengers in a minivan heading north on Route 903 in Penn Forest Township on Thursday night.
Police said the minivan swerved into the southbound lane and collided with a sport utility vehicle, killing the Jim Thorpe Area High School sophomores and seriously injuring three other teens and a 72-year-old woman.
The Carbon County school said counselors were on hand Friday at the school to help students deal with the loss. School officials have also canceled a pep rally scheduled for Wednesday, the first day of classes.
State police said the cause of the crash is under investigation.
