COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A central Ohio man has been sentenced to four years in prison for getting behind the wheel while drunk, driving off the road and killing one pedestrian and injuring another a year ago.
A judge in Columbus sentenced Scott Haslehurt on Friday after the 33-year-old pleaded guilty last month to aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and failure to stop after an accident. His blood-alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit for driving in Ohio.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that Haslehurst had been drinking all day before driving off the road and killing 59-year-old Ana Maria Illescas-Gallegos and seriously injuring 41-year-old Verulo Valladares.
Haslehurst apologized in court. His attorney said he was a bad alcoholic who couldn’t control his drinking.
He also loses his license for life.
