YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The back to school season is about more than shopping. How about a Back To School CARNIVAL!

It worked on the west side on Sunday. Local families stopped in at the Stambaugh Charter Academy on Donald Avenue to get a bite to eat and the kids had fun. The first 100 students got a free backpack.

The Mercer Community Church put the event together. “The church has been here for about a year, since July of 2014, and we thought it would be good to try to reach the community rather than hiding in the building”, says church pastor Ron Thompson. “We just want to touch the people wherever they are.”

This event was free and open to the community. Classes at Stambaugh Charter Academy begin on Monday.
