Police: Man shot at Ohio hospital in struggle with officers

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (AP) – Authorities say an off-duty policeman working security at a Cleveland-area hospital shot and critically wounded a man who tried to rip away the officer’s handgun and used the officer’s stun gun on police and a nurse.

A Garfield Heights detective says the 45-year-old man was at Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights for a psychiatric evaluation early Thursday. Sgt. Jim Mendolera says the security officer, two hospital police officers and a nurse struggled to control the man.

Mendolera says the patient charged the officer while holding the stun gun, and the policeman shot him.

The detective said Thursday morning the man was in stable but critical condition. No one else was seriously hurt.

Mendolera says there are indications that the man was high on a hallucinogenic drug.
