Officer on leave after inmate hanging at Mahoning County Jail

Kevin Burkey, found dead in jail.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene said the inmate that hanged himself in the jail Tuesday was brought in the prior weekend on theft charges after police at Saint Elizabeth Hospital arrested him.

The coroner’s office handled the investigation into the death of Kevin Burkey, 50, of Lowellville, but the Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Unit looked into the actions of the deputy assigned to the pod where Burkey was being held.

“From the initial cursory look at the situation, it appears that there may have been some violation as a result of that,” Greene said. “He (the deputy) has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome.”

At this point, the deputy involved is not being identified. Greene said the investigation should be complete in a few weeks.

The coroner’s office says Burkey was discovered with a bed sheet around his neck early Tuesday afternoon. No note was left in the cell.

Burkey was booked into the jail Sunday night.
