California couple charged in 2002 murder of Pennsylvania man

STROUDSBURG, Pa. (AP) – A California man and woman have been charged with the killing and dismemberment of a northeastern Pennsylvania man more than 13 years ago.

State police in Monroe County charged 35-year-old James Britton Jr. and 46-year-old Stacy Britton of Twentynine Palms, California, in the July 2002 murder of 46-year-old Robert Roudebush of Edwardsville.

Police alleged Friday that the now-divorced couple repeatedly stabbed Roudebush, beat him with a hammer and then dismembered his body in Wilkes-Barre because they thought he had stolen drugs and money. Roudebush’s charred remains were found in two barrels in Jackson Township, Monroe County.

Both defendants face charges including criminal homicide, conspiracy, evidence-tampering, abuse of a corpse, and perjury. Court documents indicate they will be represented by the county public defender’s office, where the phone rang unanswered Saturday.
