BELOIT, Ohio (WKBN) – A large barn fire on a farm just north of Salem early Saturday morning destroyed an historic barn. Family members say the barn was to be recognized; it was 100 years old.
Its long history came to an end at 2:15 Saturday morning when the Damascus Fire Department received an emergency call from the Oral Bates household on the same property as the barn, on Western Reserve Road in Goshen Township. A passerby woke the family up and alerted them to the fire.
The barn was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. “We had to actually be across the road, the fire, the heat was so intense that you couldn’t get near anything. You just prayed, and thank God they saved our house, saved our lives,” says family member Carol Bates.
Oral Bates says that barn contained everything he used for farming: equipment, implements, etc. “Last thing I would have ever dreamed about was having a fire that would take all that out. And besides that, that’s what I made my living doing.”
The state fire marshall was called in to investigate.
