USW: ArcelorMittal employees to work past Tuesday contract expiration

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The United Steelworkers union says it plans to continue negotiating with U.S. Steel and ArcelorMittal past Tuesday’s expiration of contracts for 30,000 steelworkers.

The union told ArcelorMittal employees in a negotiations update on its website that it would continue talks rather than seek strike authorization and asked members “to continue reporting for work as scheduled” as long as the talks continue.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the union sent a letter Monday offering to continue working during talks with U.S. Steel that began months ago even after the Sept. 1 expiration of contracts.

U.S. Steel responded that it remained committed to operating “without disruption” as contract negotiations continue and appreciated the union’s “commitment to extend the contract negotiations.”

Union officials have accused the two companies of seeking too many concessions.

ArcelorMittal operates a coke plant in Warren. Earlier this month, union members staged informational picketing outside the Warren plant.
