Prayer vigil held in Salem in support of police officers

Residents gathere in Salem for a prayer vigil in honor of police officers.

SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – A special prayer vigil Friday was held in Salem to show support for police officers.

The gathering in front of City Hall comes at a time when the safety of police officers is a major concern.

In the last month, eight police officers have been shot and killed across the United States.

“People came out and many of them told us they had our back, and that is the good part – they are here. Sometimes we forget that because it is dark and we are alone sometimes waiting for backup, and it is the idea that they are backing us,” said Patrolman Austin French. “The community is behind us, and that is the nice part to see.”

The vigil coincides with the funeral for Texas Deputy Darren Goforth who was shot to death while filling his cruiser with gas at a Houston area gas station last week.
