Fire chief: Elderly woman escapes fire, but son killed

ROCHESTER, Pa. (AP) – Authorities say an elderly western Pennsylvania woman was able to escape an early morning house fire that killed her son.

Emergency dispatchers in Beaver County said the blaze was reported at about 1 a.m. Saturday in Rochester Township.

Fire chief Mike Mamone said the woman was sleeping on the first floor and was awakened by the sound of the fire, and she called upstairs to try to awaken her son before she was forced outside by smoke and flames.

Mamone said firefighters were able to extricate the man through a second-floor window, but he had already died of what the coroner said appeared to be smoke inhalation.

Mamone said a state police fire marshal was called to investigate, but the blaze is believed to have been accidental.
