Local Democratic leaders to pick 3 candidates to represent district

BOARDMAN TWP, Ohio (WKBN) – Local democratic leaders will pick three candidates they feel would best represent the 59th district on Wednesday. The picks will be sent to Columbus where a final decision will be made on a replacement.

“We’re going to send down three names to the democratic caucus, and we’re going to rank,” said Dave Betras, Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman.

John Landers is in his second term in the Boardman Schools Board of Education. He said he thinks the Valley will benefit by having someone with a background in education in Columbus.

“We have seen what has happened to school funding over the last couple of years,” Landers said.

Former Boardman Trustee and attorney Robyn Gallito said she was disappointed and shocked to hear about Gerberry. She said she wants to go to Columbus and make a difference for the people in the Valley.

“I think it’s time to heal now. Get a team player in there, and get to work,” Gallito said.

John Boccieri is the third candidate and has represented the Valley in Congress and in the Ohio House and Senate. He said his experience would be a plus.

“Yes, yes, I’m considering it. It’s an opportunity to lead the Mahoning Valley,” Boccieri said.

It is not known who will be picked, but Ohio Democratic Chairman David Pepper is confident a proper person will be selected.

“I know some people vying for it. We have some very good people,” Pepper said.

The fourth person seen the position is Tom Lyden.

Wednesday’s meeting will take place at St. Luke’s at 6:30 p.m.
