YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown Police say a pit bull was shot during a home burglary on the city’s south side Sunday evening.

The dog’s owner spoke to 27 First News reporter Derrick Lewis about coming home and seeing her dog with a gunshot wound in the chest.

The wounds on one-year-old Roxy’s chest and shoulder are still clear.

Youngstown Police said the shooting happened Sunday evening after someone broke into Brittney Phillips’ house. Phillips and her family were at the Canfield Fair at the time.

“It took us like 15 minutes once we got the phone call to get home, and there wasn’t anybody in there,” Phillips said. “That’s when I went to go let the dog out the cage. I noticed she was shot.”

The bullet went through Roxy’s body.

“I just lost it. I just started crying. I thought she was going to die because it’s like right in the middle of her chest,” Phillips said.

Nothing was stolen from the home. Phillips is still trying to piece together what happened.

“I think they got scared of her barking and didn’t know she was in the cage and shot her,” Phillips said of the intruder.

Phillips has spent the past two days making phone calls to hospitals trying to get treatment for Roxy. She says her dog has to get her leg amputated.

“That’s like one of my kids. She’s my baby,” Phillips said.

Phillips is just happy Roxy is still alive.

Police are still investigating the break-in.
