Group demonstrates outside Boardman pet store

Protesters demonstrated outside Harbor Pet Center in Boardman, Ohio.

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – A demonstration was held on the corner of Market Street and Route 224 in Boardman Friday protesting puppy mills and Harbor Pet Center.

Elise Keller says an animal she bought from the store died Tuesday. She said preliminary results from an autopsy on the nearly 6-month-old puppy named Sophia showed liver failure. Keller claims that’s usually a direct result of over breeding.

Harbor Pet Center owner Gary Winslow apologized for the dog’s death but doesn’t agree with Keller’s assessment.

“We sell about 1,000 puppies a year and there is a very small percentage of those that will develop problems just because they are living animals,” Winslow said. “If that should happen, we always honor our warranties.”

The store’s mascot stood outside next to the protesters with a sign that read “Harbor Pet Center is against puppy mills.”

Winslow said the warranty covers a replacement puppy, but the family has asked for a refund and he’s considering it.
