WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKBN) – A group of conservative lawmakers in Washington sent the message on Monday to defund Planned Parenthood or risk a government shutdown.
A total of 31 Republicans in Congress signed a pledge to oppose any government funding bill that includes money for Planned Parenthood.
Local congressman Bill Johnson did not sign the pledge, but he has spoken out against the reproductive health organization.
A partial government shutdown could happen on October 1st if lawmakers do not approve a funding bill.
“I have supported numerous times to defund Planned Parenthood and will continue to do so. Whether or not we can get it done in the continuing decision process, I don’t know. We’ll see what the next few weeks bring about,” Congressman Johnson said.
Many Republicans are upset about videos released this summer showing Planned Parenthood officials talking about the sale of tissue from aborted fetuses. Democrats said the videos are doctored and do not accurately represent what the organization does.
