HOUSTON, Texas (WKBN) – Two students were killed and several others injured in a school bus accident Tuesday morning in Houston.
Authorities say the bus was carrying students to an area high school when it crashed.
A Houston police spokesperson says a driver in a late-model Buick LaSabre was traveling on the left side of the bus when the driver believed another vehicle was entering her lane. The driver swerved and hit the driver’s side portion of the school bus. The bus driver overcorrected, flipped the bus over the guardrail and landed on the road below.
The driver of the Buick has been detained for questioning but has not been charged at this time.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement after hearing the news:
“The State of Texas mourns the loss of Texas students today in a tragedy no parent should ever have to experience,” Abbott said. “Cecilia and I send our thoughts and prayers to the families affected by this heartbreaking incident, and I ask all Texans to support and keep Houston ISD and its community in their thoughts and prayers as they heal from this loss.”
The accident is under investigation by Houston ISD police and Houston police.
