CLEVELAND (AP) – A 3-year-old boy who was shot in the chest and died early Wednesday is the second young child killed in a drive-by shooting in the city this month.
The boy, Major Howard, and a woman were shot Tuesday night while sitting in a parked car that was strafed with gunfire on the city’s east side. The woman, who police have said is not the boy’s mother, was shot once in her thigh.
Police have not said why someone shot at the car. The man behind the wheel of the car was uninjured and drove the boy and the woman to a hospital, and from there they were flown to a trauma center.
Major died after undergoing surgery. The condition of the woman is unknown.
The shooting came less than two weeks after 5-year-old Ramon Burnett was fatally shot while throwing a football behind his grandmother’s home on Sept. 4. A man suspected of being the drive-by shooter in that case was indicted Wednesday on charges that include aggravated murder. His target, another man, was indicted on a charge of having weapons while under disability, authorities said.
A spokesman for the Cuyahoga County prosecutor’s office said Wednesday that additional charges could be filed against the men.
