COLUMBUS (WKBN) – Columbus Police have charged a man with murder after U.S. Marshals arrested him in Youngstown late Monday in connection with a dead body found in a Columbus house.

According to Columbus Police, 37-year-old Danyell Florida is accused of murdering 28-year-old Dametrious L. Edwards at a home on Champion Avenue in Columbus.

U.S. Marshals arrested Florida and Kalene Bartlett, 22, late Monday, holding them in the Mahoning County Jail as fugitives from justice.

Bartlett is charged with abuse of a corpse.

Police in the Youngstown area told WKBN that they arrested the pair after a tip from Columbus Police. Florida and Bartlett are expected to appear in court Wednesday to be brought back to Columbus.

“Colombus S.W.A.T. reached out about two possible homicide suspects. They had warrants for abuse of a corpse, but they believed they were up here in Youngstown,” said Deputy Dan DeVille with the U.S. Marshal’s Office. “They knew that the female had a friend that once lived in Columbus and was now living up here in Youngstown, so it was a real strong possibility.”

Edwards was found Sunday afternoon in the basement of the Champion Avenue home after being reported missing September 7.

Officers were sent to the Champion Avenue home early Sunday morning to check on the well-being of Edwards. According to court documents, Florida answered the door and told officers that he did not know where Edwards was.

Officers were called to the same home at 2:42 p.m. Sunday on an unknown call. Officers arrived several minutes later and were told by family members that Edwards was found in the basement and appeared to be dead.

According to court documents, he suffered severe trauma and was found wrapped in plastic. Police believe he had been dead for several days.

Bartlett and Florida remain in the Mahoning County jail until they can be transferred to Columbus.
