Students return to class after smoke reported at Struthers Middle School

struthers middle school smoke investigation

STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – Administrators hope things will be back to normal Wednesday at Struthers Middle School after a smell of smoke forced everyone there to evacuate to the Struthers High School Fieldhouse.

Shortly after 10 a.m., the 650 students at the middle school were evacuated after smoke started filling the middle school. Fire crews from Struthers and Campbell quickly arrived at the scene, but the cause of the smoke was undetermined.

Struthers Superintendent Joseph Nohra, Jr. said teachers, staff and students followed all of the necessary steps to remove the fumes from the building. Students returned to the middle school by 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, following an investigation by the Struthers Fire Department.

“Because we feel that we can at least get some things academically accomplished, and attendance at school is something that we need to have as far as the total hours, we feel that everybody’s safe over there,” Nohra said Tuesday morning following the evacuation. “We’ve got nurses over there. We’ve got our food service over there and space.”

According to Nohra, classes will resume as normal on Wednesday.
