Youngstown, OH (WKBN) – It may be their first year as a varsity program, but the Mineral Ridge soccer team is off to a 9-1 start after another win, 3-1 over Leetonia Wednesday.
The Rams played a club schedule last season, and are a fully sanctioned co-ed varsity team this year. They got off to another fast start Wednesday with two first half goals, by Trey Richards and TJ Gaydosh to give them an early 2-0 lead.
However, the Bears struck late in the half on a penalty kick by Shayne Rhodes to make it a 2-1 game at halftime. Defense was the story most of the second half, but a red card forced Leetonia to play a man down for a good part of the half. The Rams added some insurance on a penalty kick by Richards with just under 12 minutes left for his second goal of the night and a 3-1 lead.
Up next, Mineral Ridge travels to Campbell Memorial High School Saturday for a 2 PM kickoff.
