WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKBN) – Two local congressmen were in attendance at Pope Francis’s speech on Thursday.

In the historic speech to members of Congress, the Supreme Court and the American people, Francis discussed several issues impacting the United States and spoke on issues including abortion, income disparity and human rights.

Congressman Tim Ryan said he hopes that the pope’s message will encourage Congress to work together in pursuing a culture of care.

Congressman Bill Johnson, who also attended, called the speech positive and far less political. He said he was especially impressed when the pope discussed families.

“He talked about the traditional American family and the foundation of America. What makes America great is its family,” Johnson said. “He expressed concern about the fracturing in the American family.”
