Cleveland police close freeway to detonate pipe bomb

CLEVELAND (AP) – Authorities say a freeway near downtown Cleveland had to be closed for several hours to allow the Cleveland police bomb squad to detonate a pipe bomb discovered in a car during a traffic stop.

Authorities say the driver of the car has been arrested but has not been charged. The incident began around noon Saturday when a Cleveland Metroparks ranger stopped a car on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive beneath Interstate 90. A Cleveland Metroparks spokeswoman says in a statement that a drug dog detected narcotics inside the car and that the pipe bomb was found during a search of the vehicle.

Bomb squad technicians detonated the device and the freeway was reopened around 6 p.m. Saturday. No one was injured.
