CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – Members of the Valley’s law enforcement community are working to support the family of one of their fellow officers who lost his battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Organizers of a benefit road race for the family of former Jackson Township and Mill Creek Sergeant Brian Newhard were plotting out their course Monday afternoon at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

The race will be held Saturday, October 17 and include a five kilometer run and a two mile walk.

Newhard passed away a couple weeks ago, less than a month after being diagnosed with ALS.

“I’m sure they need as much help as they can right now,” race organizer T.J. Dobbins said. “The law enforcement family, hopefully we can step up and provide a little extra help for them.”

Dobbins tells us organizers hope to have at least a hundred runners for the event in order to raise several thousand dollars for the Newhard family.

You can sign up for the race online.
