YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, recognizing a disease that impacts many women. Whether you know a family member, a co-worker or a friend who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, or maybe you are battling the disease yourself, it is important to detect the warning signs early.
Self breast exams are one way to detect the disease early.
Suzanne Zupko, a registered nurse who works with breast cancer patients, talked with WKBN’s Erika Thomas about why early detection and self exams are so important.
- Early detection and treatment leads to longer survival rates among women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
- Monthly self breast exams are an important way to notice changes in the breasts.
- Only 20 percent of breast cancers are initially found with women who are doing self breast exams.
