Campbell teacher sentenced for sex with students

campbell, ohio teacher charged with sex with student sentenced to jail

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Eight months pregnant, Shannon Wojtowicz tearfully apologized in court on Tuesday. In August, Wojtowicz was convicted of having sexual relations with three different students.

“I hope that everybody else can, in time, forgive me for all of my actions, for all the harm I caused,” she said.

Wojtowicz, 30, of Enon Valley, pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual battery, one count of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance and one count of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles before Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge R. Scott Krichbaum in August. She originally was indicted on a dozen charges, stemming from having sex with three students, as well as exchanging nude and suggestive photos and text messages with the victims.

The former Campbell High School math teacher and coach resigned from the district after the investigation began in January.

“I’ve embarrassed myself, my family, my community, my husband,” she told the court.

Prosecutors said Wojtowicz’ actions date back to the fall of 2011 and continued until January of this year, when school administrators and police began investigating allegations of her wrongdoing. The case was investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Crimes Against Children unit since two of the woman’s relatives work for the city of Campbell.

“The sentence here needs to send a message that it is inappropriate for teachers to be having sex with high school students,” said Mahoning County Assistant Prosecutor Jenn McLaughlin on Tuesday.

Judge Scott Krichbaum agreed, calling what Wojtowicz did a case of “serial bad judgement.”

“This type of thing that you did is unforgivable. It’s inconceivable, first of all, but its certainly unforgivable,” he said.

Although defense lawyers asked for a lenient sentence, the judge told Wojtowicz there would be no justice in that.

“That’s not something that you deserve. My job is to give you what you deserve,” he said.

The judge sentenced Wojtowicz to four years in prison, and she will be labeled a sexual offender.

Following the sentencing, Wojtowicz, who had been crying through most of the hearing, started sobbing loudly asking, “What am I going to do?” as she was led away. She is expected to give birth to her child behind bars.
