Lake Erie resort: algae shut its beach dozen times this year

PORT CLINTON, Ohio (AP) – A northern Ohio summer resort community that sits along Lake Erie says it’s considering building a pool because of the ongoing algae problems in the lake.

The head of the Lakeside Chautauqua community near Marblehead says they had to close their Lake Erie beach about a dozen times this past summer.

He says it’s disheartening to tell guests to stay out of the water.

About 125,000 people visit Lakeside each summer to stay in the hotel, homes and cottages along the shoreline.

Tourism officials along the lake say most businesses didn’t suffer any big drop-offs in visitors this year. But they add that they’re worried that some won’t come back if the algae blooms continue to be a problem.
