Perfect day for annual CROP Hunger Walk

Dozens of people walk in the annual CROP Hunger Walk in Youngstown.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Sunshine and temperatures near 70: It was perfect weather for the annual CROP Hunger Walk in Youngstown.

“Ending Hunger One Step at a Time” was the theme this year. The event is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Association of Churches. Hundreds marched with members of their churches.

The fundraiser is the oldest charity walk in the United States. It’s a tradition in the Mahoning Valley since the 1980s.

“75 percent goes to help developing countries, and then 25 percent comes back to this area and is divided between Fish Samaritan (House), Protestant Family Services, and Catholic Charities,” says the Reverend Nora Smith, chairperson of the event.

Annually, about 1,300 such walks involve about 120,000 people and raise some $12 million.
